Workbook sheet · Grade 1 braille
Grade 1 braille (uncontracted) — what we actually support
Grade 1 means one cell per letter (plus markers). Grade 2 adds contractions that need a different engine. Our translator and drills stay on Grade 1 so we do not pretend this site is a full contracted transcription tool.
Try Grade 1 here
Same engine as the home page. Contracted Grade 2 is out of scope on this site.
Worked examples
Word: like (Grade 1)
→ Letter cells for l-i-k-e — one cell each
Grade 2 may shorten the same word with a contraction. We do not expand or produce that here.

Questions on this sheet
Grade 1 vs Grade 2?
Grade 1 is mostly one cell per letter plus markers. Grade 2 adds contractions.
Why skip full Grade 2?
A small browser tool should not pretend to be a full contracted engine.
Is UEB the same as Grade 1?
UEB includes Grade 1 and Grade 2. We stay on the Grade 1 (uncontracted) part.
What should learners do next?
Translate a word, tap the alphabet, then try a short quiz.
Watch for these
- Some sites claim “Grade 2” with buggy output. We only claim Grade 1.
- UEB naming can get dense; start with cells, not acronym soup.
- A printed book that looks shorter than our output is probably contracted braille.
How this sheet works
Use the translator below for Grade 1 encode/decode, then jump to practice or the how-to-read page when you want recognition drills.
Assumptions
English learning context. Simplified explanations, not a full UEB rulebook.
Use when
Learning foundations. Checking what “uncontracted” means before you practice.
Skip when
Producing contracted books. That needs proper transcription tools or people.
