About BrailleLabBase

BrailleLabBase is a small set of Grade 1 (uncontracted) English braille tools that run in your browser. You can convert short text to Unicode braille and back, tap letter and number charts, and run a short quiz. No account. Convert stays on your device.

A lot of "braille translator" pages bury the converter under ads, or send you to a PDF. Here the home page opens on the translator so you can paste and copy first. Charts and practice sit one click away when you need a letter or a drill.

What you can do here

  • Translator - English ↔ Grade 1 Unicode braille, with Unicode / dots / ASCII views and copy buttons
  • Alphabet - A-Z six-dot cells you can tap, inspect, and copy
  • Numbers - number sign + a-j digit cells (1-0)
  • Practice - ten-question cell drills in this browser tab
  • How to read - first-decade lesson (a-j), a sample word, and how digits reuse letter cells

Who it is for

  • Beginners who want the six-dot model and a-j before a full course
  • Teachers or helpers who need a tap chart for a short demo
  • Anyone checking a Grade 1 label, name, or short phrase on screen

If you need finger reading training, a TVI, or certified literary transcription, use a qualified teacher or specialist tooling. This site is a free browser desk, not a school or clinic.

What we do not claim

  • Full UEB Grade 2 contracted engine
  • Vision-care, rehab planning, or medical advice
  • Certified transcription or exam credit
  • Photo / camera OCR
  • Hardware embosser drivers
  • Full Nemeth math translation

We only ship Grade 1 so a thin page does not wear a Grade 2 badge. Mapping details and Worker notes are on methodology.

How a first session usually goes

  1. Skim how to read if the six-dot cell is new to you
  2. Convert a short phrase on the translator
  3. Tap unclear letters on the alphabet
  4. Run one round of practice if you want a check
